Gas, power prices to soar

The government has planned to raise the prices of gas and electricity along with a cut in subsidy in both power and energy sectors in the next budget. The power and gas distribution companies have already proposed Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) for a hike in electricity and gas prices. Gas meters by October

The government yesterday formally inaugurated prepaid gas meters for the residential consumers of the capital's Lalmatia and Mohammadpur areas in a bid to reduce wastage of the utility as part of its key plan to ease gas crisis. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to the prime minister, opened a gas meter with a smart-card at a ceremony in Lalmatia. Under a pilot project, state-run Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd has installed 4,500 prepaid meters in the two areas since May last year at a cost of Tk 6.7 crore from its own resources.

ABB has adopted a flexible, customer-driven approach as it marshals its resources and expertise in order to capitalize on growing renewable and hybrid microgrid opportunities, a trend that is now global in scope, Maxine Ghavi, ABB's global director, microgrids, told Renewable Energy World. “The drivers are different in different regions and among different types of customers,” she said. “It could be resilience, energy security; reducing costs, environmental impacts or reducing reliance on diesel fuel; or providing energy access — the drivers in play in specific markets and situations are multi-polar.”
